Postdoc Fellowships
Browse postdoctoral fellowships across disciplines — funded research positions and early-career awards for recent PhDs, with fit and timing guidance.
A postdoc fellowship is funding attached to you rather than to a lab, and that distinction shapes everything about the category. Fellowships buy independence: you propose your own project, often choose your host, and carry a credential that signals you can win competitive funding. The trade-off is a long, uncertain pipeline, so most people pursue fellowships in parallel with advertised postdoc positions rather than instead of them.
Eligibility windows are the first filter. Schemes define who counts as early-career by time since PhD, sometimes adjusted for career breaks, caregiving, or clinical training, and some are open only before you defend while others require the degree in hand. The second filter is mobility: a meaningful share of fellowships exist specifically to move researchers between countries or institutions, and staying at your PhD lab can be explicitly disallowed. Read both rules before anything else, because they eliminate more applicants than science ever does.
The application itself has two halves: a research proposal and a fit story. Reviewers fund a combination of the project, the applicant’s trajectory, and the host environment, so a strong proposal with a vague mentoring plan loses to a good proposal embedded in a clearly supportive lab. Contact potential mentors months ahead; hosts often co-write parts of the application and their institution may need to approve the submission.
Common mistakes are applying to a single scheme and waiting, recycling a thesis chapter as a proposal instead of showing a next step toward independence, and missing that stipends, benefits, and research allowances vary enormously between schemes. Browse the open fellowships below, map each one’s eligibility window against your PhD date, and verify terms on the funder’s official page before approaching a host.

Save the source page, deadline, eligibility rules, required documents, contact details, and any program-specific scoring criteria. If the deadline is rolling, apply early enough for review queues and budget limits. If the deadline is fixed, work backward from the closing date and leave time for recommendations, institutional approvals, financial documents, and portal errors.

Postdoc Fellowships FAQ
When should I apply for postdoc fellowships?
Usually 6 to 18 months before you want to start, since many schemes have annual deadlines and long review timelines. Some require you to apply before finishing your PhD, others only after.
Do postdoc fellowships require a host institution?
Most do — you typically need a named mentor or host lab that has agreed to support your application before you submit. Arranging the host is often the longest part of the process.
Are postdoc fellowships different from postdoc jobs?
Yes. A fellowship is funding awarded to you (often portable and prestigious), while a postdoc job is a position funded from a lab's existing grants. Check each scheme's official terms for salary, benefits, and research budget.
